The population of Lewistown is 5,901, making it the largest city in Central Montana. The city was founded in 1888 by William Chetwood and is named after Meriwether Lewis, who explored the area in 1806.

History of Lewistown (Montana)
Lewistown is a city in and the county seat of Fergus County, Montana, United States. The population was 5,870 at the 2010 census. It is located in central Montana, on the west side of the Continental Divide, about halfway between Yellowstone National Park to the south and Glacier National Park to the north. Lewistown is the principal city of the Lewistown, Montana Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Fergus County, and is part of the Great FallsBillingsMissoula combined statistical area.
The history of Lewistown begins with the establishment of Fort Lewistown in 1805 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The expedition was looking for a route across the continental divide and established the fort near the present day city. The fort was abandoned in 1806 but was reestablished in 1807. It was abandoned again in 1811 but was reoccupied in 1812. The area around the fort became known as Camp Fortunate and was the first permanent white settlement in Montana.
In 1862, John Bozeman and his party passed through the area on their way to the gold fields of Virginia City. Bozeman established the Bozeman Trail, which passed through the Lewistown area. The trail was used by prospectors and settlers headed west. The first wagon train that used the trail passed through the Lewistown area in 1863.
In 1864, gold was discovered in the Judith Mountains, west of Lewistown. A mining camp was established at the site of the present day city and was originally called Lewiston. The name was later changed to Lewistown.
The Lewistown area was also the site of several conflicts during the Montana Wars of 186668. These conflicts were between the U.S. Army and the Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians.
In 1884, the Northern Pacific Railway reached the Lewistown area. The railway brought an influx of settlers and increased economic activity. Lewistown was incorporated as a city in 1900 with a population of 1,200.
The city continued to grow and prosper and by 1930, the population had reached 5,000. The Great Depression hit Lewistown hard but the city slowly recovered and by 1940, the population had reached 6,000.
During World War II, Lewistown was the site of a prisoner of war camp. The camp housed German and Italian prisoners. After the war, the city continued to grow and by 1950, the population had reached 7,500.
The city has continued to grow and today, the population is over 5,000. Lewistown is a prosperous city with a diversified economy. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, a hospital, a community college, and many retail businesses. The city is also a regional center for agriculture, livestock, and tourism.
