History of Lakewood (Ohio)
Lakewood, Ohio is a west side suburb of Cleveland in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. Lakewood was first settled in the late 1830s, and officially became a city in 1953. The city is known for its art community, historic homes, and diverse population.
Lakewood was originally part of Rockport Township, which was founded in 1820. The township included all of presentday Lakewood, Rocky River, and Fairview Park. In the late 1830s, settlers began moving into the area, which was then known as Hamlet. The first recorded settler was Joseph L. Fay, who built a log cabin on the present site of Lakewood Park in 1837.
The area continued to grow, and by 1850 there were approximately 50 families living in Hamlet. A post office was established in 1851, and the first schoolhouse was built in 1853. In 1854, Hamlet was officially renamed Lakewood, after the nearby lake (now Lakewood Park).
The city continued to grow in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Lakewood Village Historic District, which includes more than 1,600 historic homes, was established in 1989. The city is also home to a number of art galleries, theaters, and other cultural organizations.
Lakewood is a diverse city, with a strong immigrant population. According to the 2010 census, the city has a population of 52,131, of which 24% are foreignborn. Lakewood is also home to a large number of refugees and asylum seekers.
