History of La Grange
In the early 1800s, a small group of settlers from Kentucky came to an area in northeast Texas that would become known as La Grange. The pioneers were enticed by the possibility of cheap land and a new start; however, they found a land that was largely unsettled and undeveloped. The settlers persevered, and by the mid19th century, the town of La Grange had become a thriving community with a population of more than 1,000 people.
The town grew steadily throughout the remainder of the 1800s and early 1900s. It became an important stop on the Houston and Texas Central Railway, and many businesses and industries sprang up along the rail line. La Grange also became known as a center for German culture in Texas, as a large number of German immigrants settled in the area.
In the years after World War II, La Grange experienced a period of economic decline. The railway stopped running through town, and many businesses closed their doors. However, the city began to rebound in the 1980s, when it underwent a period of revitalization. Today, La Grange is a thriving community with a vibrant downtown, a strong sense of history, and a bright future.
