Williamsburg is an independent city in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,068. In 2014, the population was estimated to be 14,691. Located on the Virginia Peninsula, Williamsburg is in the northern part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. It is bordered by James City County and York County.
Williamsburg was founded in 1632 as Middle Plantation, a fortified settlement on high ground between the James and York rivers. The city served as the capital of the Colony of Virginia from 1699 to 1780 and was the center of political events in Virginia leading to the American Revolution. The College of William & Mary, established in 1693, was the first college in the United States to issue degrees in the liberal arts. The city was a hotbed of antiBritish sentiment during the leadup to the American Revolution; in May 1774, the House of Burgesses moved to nearby Virginia Beach, to avoid confrontation with Governor Lord Dunmore, who had dismissed it. In 1781, the city was the site of the Battle of Yorktown, the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War, which resulted in the surrender of British General Cornwallis and the end of hostilities in North America.
Today, Williamsburg is a popular tourist destination, with three main areas: Historic Williamsburg, the Williamsburg Veterans Memorial, and the College of William & Mary. History of Williamsburg
The first English settlers arrived in the area now known as Williamsburg in 1632. These settlers were members of the Capathia Company that had been granted a charter by King Charles I to establish a colony in Virginia. The Capathians established a small settlement on the York River, which they called Middle Plantation. In 1699, the Virginia General Assembly moved the capital of the colony from Jamestown to Middle Plantation, and the town was renamed Williamsburg in honor of King William III of England.
Williamsburg served as the capital of Virginia from 1699 until 1780, when the state capital was moved to Richmond. During this time, Williamsburg was a center of political and social life in Virginia. The town was home to the Virginia governor’s palace, the College of William & Mary, and the Virginia General Assembly. Williamsburg was also a popular destination for tourists, who came to see the historic buildings and to participate in the many social activities taking place in the town.
In the early 1800s, Williamsburg began to decline in popularity and importance as Richmond emerged as the new center of Virginia politics and society. By the mid19th century, Williamsburg was a small town of just a few thousand people.
