History of Saint Albans
Saint Albans is a city in Franklin County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,922 at the 2010 census. Saint Albans City is one of the two shire towns (county seats) of Franklin County, the other being Highgate Springs. It is also the northernmost city in the state.
The town of St. Albans was created by an act of the Vermont General Assembly on March 3, 1763 as one of the New Hampshire Grants. The town was named after Saint Alban, the first British martyr. The town was organized the following year.
Albans Bay was the site of a major Vermont Indian village called Missisciquois by the French and St. Albans by the English, who depopulated it in the 1759 Battle of the Plains during the French and Indian War. Other battles followed in the Revolutionary War, including the October 1780 Battle of St. Albans, which was fought primarily in Canada. In all of these battles, Vermont militiamen were prominent. There is a monument to Vermont’s volunteer soldiers who served in the St. Albans Raid on the village green.
The city of St. Albans is located on the edge of Lake Champlain, close to the Canadian border. smuggling was rampant across the border before the War of 1812. The St. Albans Historical Society Museum, housed in the former Grand Trunk Railway station, tells the story of the forged $10 bill that gave rise to the famous August 29, 1864 raid by 21 Confederate soldiers led by Col. Benjamin Grierson during the Civil War. Dubbed “the great Confederate raid of 1864”, the raiders intended to rob three banks in the city but were thwarted when bank employees recognized the counterfeit bills they were attempting to use. The raiders did manage to rob several stores before fleeing back to Canada.
The city was also home to the St. Albans Messenger, the oldest daily newspaper in Vermont. The newspaper was founded in 1865 and published its last issue in 2008.
The St. Albans Historic District, which encompasses the downtown area, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
The city is home to the Vermont State Fair, which is held annually in late August or early September.
