Crossett was founded in 1883 as a sawmill town by the Crossett Lumber Company. The lumber company was incorporated in Delaware in 1900 as the Crossett Lumber Company. In 1901, the company was reincorporated in Arkansas. The company owned large tracts of forests in Arkansas and Louisiana. The sawmill in Crossett was one of the largest in the world. The sawmill depended on the Crossett Railway Company to transport logs to the mill.

The sawmill operated until it was closed in 2002. The closure of the sawmill had a devastating effect on the city’s economy. The city has attempted to diversify its economy since the sawmill’s closure.
