History of Clanton
Clanton is a city in central Alabama, and one of the county seats of Shelby County. The city was incorporated in 1858. It was named for James H. Clanton, a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War.
The area around Clanton was settled in the 1830s by Scottish, Irish, and English immigrants. The first county seat of Shelby County was Shelbyville, which is now a ghost town. In 1854, the county seat was moved to Columbiana. However, there was a dispute between the towns of Columbiana and Wilsonville over which town would be the county seat. This dispute was finally resolved when the two towns merged and formed the city of Columbiana in 1858.
In the same year, the town of Clanton was founded and named after James H. Clanton. The city was not originally intended to be the county seat, but when Columbiana was destroyed by a fire in 1861, Clanton became the new county seat.
During the American Civil War, Clanton was a Confederate stronghold. The city was occupied by Union troops in 1865, and many of the buildings were burned.
After the war, Clanton slowly began to rebuild. The city became a center for cotton cultivation and processing. In the early 1900s, Clanton was also a major hub for the timber industry.
