History of Casa Grande

Casa Grande, Arizona is a town rich in history. The area was first inhabited by the Hohokam people who were known for their irrigation systems and stone dwellings. The Hohokam people built the first casa grande, or “great house,” in the area which served as a community gathering place. The structure is now preserved as a National Historic Landmark.

The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish missionaries. Father Eusebio Francisco Kino founded the Mission San Xavier del Bac in 1699. The mission was constructed of adobe and is still standing today. It is considered to be one of the bestpreserved examples of Spanish colonial architecture in the United States.
