History of Lexington (Virginia)
In the mid1700s, settlers from Virginia and Pennsylvania began establishing farms in the area known as Rockbridge County. In October 1778, during the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Lexington was fought here. Colonel Samuel Hawes commanded the Continental Army’s 12th Regiment of Foot, which guarded Virginia’s western frontier against the British and their Native American allies. The town of Lexington soon developed around a tavern established by Robert Coleman.
The first county courthouse was built in 1780. John Marshall, who later became Chief Justice of the United States, was born in Lexington in 1755. In April 1804, during the War of 1812, Lexington was occupied by a detachment of Marines from the USS Chesapeake. The town was eventually recaptured by American forces.
In 1847, the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) was founded in Lexington. VMI is the oldest statesupported military college in the United States. Confederate States President Jefferson Davis graduated from VMI in 1828. General Stonewall Jackson, a professor at VMI, was killed by friendly fire during the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863.
During the American Civil War, Lexington served as the capital of the Confederate States of America for a brief time in 1865. Union forces under General Philip Sheridan destroyed much of the town in 1864, including VMI. After the war, Lexington was rebuilt.
In 1929, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech) was founded in Blacksburg, Virginia. In early 1942, the United States Army established a military training facility, Camp Lee, in Lexington and neighboring Buena Vista. The Army Signal Corps’ School (now the Army Cyber School) moved to Camp Lee in 1951. In late 1953, the Army Material Command’s Supply and Maintenance Agency (now the Defense Logistics Agency) also moved to Camp Lee.
Today, Lexington is a thriving city with a rich history. The downtown area features a variety of shops and restaurants, as well as a farmers market. The Rockbridge Area Conservation Council manages several nature trails in the area. Lexington is also home to the Washington and Lee University School of Law and Virginia Military Institute.
