Jonesborough is a town in and the county seat of Washington County, Tennessee, in the southeastern United States. The town’s signature slogan is “Tennessee’s Oldest Town,” and Jonesborough was founded in 1779, when the area was still part of North Carolina. The town was named after North Carolina state legislator, Willie Jones.
Today, Jonesborough is home to a population of just over 5,000 people and is a popular tourist destination in Northeast Tennessee. The town is home to a number of historic buildings and sites, including the 18thcentury Jonesborough Inn, the oldest continuously operating inn in Tennessee, as well as a number of other bed and breakfasts. The town’s Main Street is lined with a variety of shops, restaurants, and galleries.

History of Jonesborough
Jonesborough is a town in, and the county seat of, Washington County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5, 174 at the 2010 census. It is Tennessee’s oldest town, having been established in 1779, and is the state’s oldest capital city, having served as such for the state of Franklin from 1784 to 1788.03 and then as Tennessee’s first capital from 1796 until 1817.
Jonesborough was founded in 1779 by Isaac Shelby, John Sevier, and James Robertson, who had fertilizer and other supplies delivered to the area from Virginia by Daniel Boone in a large wagon train. The town was named after John Jones, a Virginia legislator who helped create Washington County. Jonesborough was originally a part of North Carolina, but became part of the Southwest Territory in 1790 and Tennessee in 1796.
The town’s Declaration of Independence was read on the steps of the courthouse on July 4, 1776, becoming the first such document ever read in what is now Tennessee. As such, it holds the distinction of being both the first town established west of the Appalachian Mountains and the oldest town in Tennessee.
In 1784, Jonesborough served as the capital of the shortlived state of Franklin. The city was briefly the capital of Tennessee from 1796 until 1817, when the capital was moved to Murfreesboro.
During the Civil War, Jonesborough was occupied by Union troops on March 10, 1862. The town was the site of a small Battle of Jonesborough on August 31, 1863, between Union and Confederate forces.
Although the war led to the town’s decline, Jonesborough regained its prominence in the late 19th century as a center of trade for the agricultural surrounding area. Today, Jonesborough is a quaint town with a vibrant Main Street that includes many antique and specialty shops. The town’s historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
