History of Jefferson City
In 1821, the Missouri Legislature purchased land on the Lamine River to build a state capitol in the center of the state. They chose the site because of its location on the river and its proximity to the Boone’s Lick Trail, which was the major westward route for settlers at the time. The city was named for Thomas Jefferson, who had helped draft the Louisiana Purchase, of which Missouri was a part.
The city began to grow rapidly after the state legislature moved there in 1826. In 1839, the city was designated as the county seat of Cole County. By 1851, the city had a population of nearly 3,000.
The American Civil War brought many changes to Jefferson City. The state legislature voted to secede from the Union in 1861, but the city itself was occupied by Union troops throughout the war. After the war, Missouri was readmitted to the Union, and Jefferson City became the state capital once again.
