History of Hickory

The city of Hickory is located in Catawba County, North Carolina. The area was first settled by Catawba Indians who had established a village known as Nikwasi. The name “Hickory” is thought to come from the Catawba word for milkweed which was used to make their fishing nets.

In 1750, the first European settlers came to the area. These settlers were mostly ScotchIrish immigrants who had come to America in search of religious and economic freedom. They established farms and businesses and the community began to grow.

During the American Revolutionary War, the city of Hickory was taken over by British troops. The British occupation lasted for six months until the Americans regained control.

After the war, the city continued to grow. In 1849, the first school was built. In 1859, the first post office was established. And in 1863, the city was officially incorporated.

The late 19th and early 20th centuries were a time of growth and prosperity for Hickory. The city became known for its furniture manufacturing and textiles. The population grew and new businesses and homes were built.

The Great Depression and World War II caused a downturn in the city’s economy. But Hickory was able to rebound and by the 1950s, it was once again a thriving community.
