History of Palmdale

Early History

The first people to live in the area now known as Palmdale were the Shoshone Native Americans. They lived here for thousands of years, until the early 1800s when the first Spanish settlers arrived in the area. The Spanish established a few small ranchos in the area, and it remained mostly undeveloped until the late 1800s when the construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad brought more people and development to the area.

The City of Palmdale was incorporated in 1962, and at that time it was still a very small community of just over 3,000 people. The 1960s saw a boom in the aerospace industry in Southern California, and Palmdale became home to a number of aerospace and defense contractors. This helped to spur population growth, and by 1970 the city’s population had grown to over 30,000.

The 1980s and 1990s were a period of rapid growth for Palmdale. The population doubled between 1980 and 1990, and then doubled again between 1990 and 2000. This growth was largely due to the expansion of the aerospace industry in the area, as well as the completion of the Antelope Valley Freeway which made Palmdale more accessible to commuters from Los Angeles.

Today, Palmdale is the largest city in the Antelope Valley with a population of over 156,000. It is home to a number of aerospace and defense contractors, as well as a growing number of tech companies. The city is continued to grow, and is expected to reach a population of over 200,000 by 2025.
