Salinas is a city in Monterey County, California, United States. The population was 155,662 as of the 2010 census. Salinas is the county seat and largest municipality of Monterey County. Salinas is a midsize city located 10 miles (16 km) eastsoutheast of the mouth of the Salinas River and roughly eight miles from the Pacific Ocean. The marine climate is ideal for the floral industry and grape vineyards. The city is known for its industrial and suburban sprawl and as the hometown of writer and Nobel Prize in Literature laureate John Steinbeck.
Salinas serves as the main commercial and industrial center for the region. Agriculture is still a major industry in the area, particularly notable products being lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries, and broccoli. The town is also home to the largest concentration of U.S. migratory agricultural workers, many of whom are employed in the lettuce industry.

History of Salinas
In 1769, the Spanish Portola expedition came across a large Native American village on the banks of the Salinas River. The expedition was looking for Monterey Bay, but instead they found the village, which they named “Salinas de Gajon”. The village was later destroyed by Spanish soldiers, but the name remained.
In 1833, the Mexican government granted land to Sebastian Cantua, who established the Rancho del Rincon de San Francisquito. This rancho included the area of presentday Salinas.
American settlers began arriving in the 1850s, and by 1854 there were enough people to form a town. The town was incorporated in 1856, and named after the nearby Salinas River.
The 1860s were a time of great change for Salinas. In 1862, the town was still tiny, with only about 500 residents. But by 1866, the population had exploded to over 3,000, thanks to the nearby Fort Ord military base and the establishment of the Southern Pacific Railroad.
The 1870s saw more growth, as Salinas became an important stop on the railroad. The town was also known for its agriculture, especially its wheat fields.
In 1886, John Steinbeck was born in Salinas. Steinbeck would go on to become one of the most famous writers of the 20th century, and his novels would often feature Salinas as a setting.
The early 20th century was a time of expansion for Salinas. The population continued to grow, reaching over 10,000 by 1920. New businesses and industries moved into town, and agriculture became even more important.
