History of Turlock
Turlock is a city in Stanislaus County, California, United States, part of the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 64,776 at the 2010 census. Turlock lies in the San Joaquin Valley, 31 miles (50 km) south of Modesto, 37 miles (60 km) east of Merced and 107 miles (172 km) eastsoutheast of San Francisco. Its motto is “The Heart of the Valley” and it is known for its agricultural production. It is home to beds, dairies and crops, particularly sweetened condensed milk, tomatoes and walnuts.
The town began as a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach route which ran through the western United States from 1858 to 1861 and followed what is now West Main Street. When California gained statehood in 1850, Californians of Spanish and México heritage were numerous in Turlock, and lived alongside Anglos. The town was first incorporated in 1864, adding a few more parcels of land as it grew over the next few decades to reach its present size of just over 20 square miles (52 km2).
The history of Turlock can be traced back to its original founders, John and Charles Mitchell, who purchased 1,560 acres (6.3 km2) of Rancho Cinco de Mayo in 1871. The name “Turlock” was first used by these two men when they subdivided and registered their property in 1873. In 1884, the Central Pacific Railroad reached Turlock, but it was not until 1897 that the city saw significant growth when Southern Pacific Railroad built a branch line from Merced to Turlock. The railroad brought with it an influx of people and led to the establishment of many businesses, including a large brickyard that supplied material for several building projects in San Francisco following the 1906 earthquake. The town continued to grow steadily through the early 20th century, reaching a population of over 3,000 by the mid1920s.
The start of World War II brought a new wave of migration to Turlock as soldiers were trained at the local infantry camp. This growth continued after the war as families settled in Turlock and agriculture continued to be a major part of the local economy. The city’s population reached 20,000 by 1960 and continued to grow rapidly thereafter, reaching over 50,000 by the early 1980s. However, the late 1980s and early 1990s saw a significant slowdown in Turlock’s growth due to the agricultural recession which hit the Central Valley. The city’s population began to level off in the mid1990s and has remained fairly stable since then, standing at over 60,000 as of the 2010 census.
While Turlock has always been known as an agricultural town, it has also made a name for itself in recent years as a hub for the arts and entertainment. The city is home to a number of art galleries, performance venues and museums, and hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year. Turlock is also home to Stanislaus State University, which enrolls over 11,000 students and brings a diverse mix of people and cultures to the city.
