Harrison is a small city located in southern New Jersey, United States. The area was first settled by Native Americans and was a part of the Lenape tribe’s territory. The Lenape were pushed out of the area by Dutch and English settlers in the 1600s. Harrison was originally part of Newark, but was incorporated as a separate municipality in 1840. The city was named after 9th President of the United States, William Henry Harrison.
The city grew steadily throughout the 19th century as a result of the construction of the Newark and New York Railroad in 1837. Harrison became a 4th class city in 1869 and a 3rd class city in 1874. In 1883, the city was named one of the first 25 cities in the nation to have electrical lighting. Harrison was also known for being a major manufacturing center for woolen goods, rubber, and cigars. The city’s population peaked in 1930 at over 23,000 residents.
The Great Depression and World War II hurt Harrison’s economy, but the city rebounded in the postwar years. The opening of the New Jersey Turnpike in 1951 made Harrison more accessible and resulted in an increase in population and development. Today, Harrison is a diverse, urban community with a population of over 13,000 residents.
