Glassboro is a borough in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough’s population was 18,579,[8][9][10] reflecting an increase of 2,564 (+15.9%) from the 16,015 counted in the 2000 Census,[18] which had in turn increased by 1,901 (+13.6%) from the 14,114 counted in the 1990 Census.[19]
Glassboro was incorporated as a borough on March 11, 1908, from portions of Clayton Township and Glassboro Township. The borough is named for its glass industry. It is home to Rowan University and Rowan College at Gloucester County.
Downtown Glassboro features a unique mixture of fine dining, shopping, and nightlife all within walking distance of the Rowan University campus. The Downtown area also includes The Wheeler School, a preschool8th grade private school which has been educating young people in Glassboro since 1909.
Founded in 1779 by Cassey and Solomon Higbee, Higbee’s Glassworks produced generations of handblown glassware until it ceased production in 1863. Today, the Bottaccio Glassworks Museum on High Street houses the world’s largest collection of Higbee’s handblown glass.
The Glassboro Center City Association (GCCA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the revitalization and Redevelopment of Downtown Glassboro. The GCCA sponsors many community events throughout the year including the everpopular Whitesboro Street Fair which takes place every September.

Glassboro is a borough in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough’s population was 18,579, reflecting an increase of 2,578 (+16.0%) from the 16,001 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 1,874 (+13.4%) from the 14,127 counted in the 1990 Census.
Glassboro was founded in 1779 by Solomon Stanger, a Revolutionary War veteran. The first glass factory in the U.S. was built there in 1780, and it became the site of the first practical demonstration of the power of coalfired electric generators by Thomas Edison in 1883.
The town was home to Glassboro State College, which opened in 1923 and eventually evolved into Rowan University.
The borough is perhaps best known as the host of the 1967 Glassboro Summit Conference between U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson and Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin.
