The history of Garden City, New York is a long and storied one. Founded in 1869 by railroad tycoon Alexander T. Stewart, the community was originally envisioned as a planned utopian community, one that would be a model for other cities to follow. Garden City’s first few decades were very successful. The city attracted a wealthy and diverse population, and became known for its beautiful gardens and treelined streets.
