History of Galena

Galena is a city in northwest Illinois, United States. It is the county seat of Jo Daviess County. Galena is the largest city in the county with a population of 3,429 in 2010, down from 3,685 in 2000. Galena is the southernmost city in the Galena Territory. The city is named for the mineral galena, which was found early on by settlers in the area.

Galena was founded in 1826 by Moses Meeker on the Fever River, soon after the construction of Fort Armstrong. When the lead mines played out, Galena became a river port and steadily grew throughout the early 19th century. The city served as the capitals of both Wisconsin Territory (1836–1837) and Illinois Territory (1837–1838).

While the city grew, so did its reputation as a opposed to change, a “river town”. In the 1850s, Galena was a bustling city of development and opportunity, its population topped only by Chicago. The city was also a center for abolitionism, as many Galena residents were ardent opponents of slavery.

The outbreak of the American Civil War put a damper on Galena’s prosperity. Many residents left to join the Union army, while others sympathized with the Confederacy. Lead mines closed and river trade slowed. The city’s population did not grow again until after the war. From 1860 to 1900, the city’s population grew very slowly, rising from 3,000 to just over 5,000.

The twentieth century brought more change to Galena than the previous hundred years. The city’s first automobile arrived in 1903. The oneroom Galena Public Library opened in 1908. In November 1928, the Mississippi River froze over, allowing people to drive across from Galena to Wisconsin. In 1959, the Galena Casino (now the Jumer’s Casino Resort) was built, becoming the first legalized gambling casino in Illinois.

The late 20th and early 21st centuries have seen continued growth and redevelopment in Galena. The city’s Main Street has been designated as an National Historic District, and numerous buildings have been restored. The Galena Territory, a 6,000acre (24km2) planned community that surrounds the city, was established in 1969. The Galena Historic District, which includes most of the city’s downtown area, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
