History of Searcy

Searcy, Arkansas is a city in White County. The city was named after Richard Searcy, the first judge of the Superior Court of the Territory of Arkansas. Searcy was incorporated in 1838. White County was established in 1835. The county was named for Hugh Lawson White, a supporter of Andrew Jackson and a justice on the Tennessee Supreme Court.

In 1837, Searcy became the county seat of White County. The first courthouse was a log cabin. A twostory frame courthouse was built in 1849. In 1858, a new courthouse was completed. It was a twostory brick building with a cupola. The current courthouse was built in 1900. It is a threestory brick building with a dome.

The first school in Searcy was a private school that was held in a log cabin. The first public school was established in 1849. The first high school was built in 1901.

Searcy was a stop on the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad. The railroad was built in 1857. The Memphis and Little Rock Airline Railroad was built in 1879. The St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway was built in 1903.

Searcy was the home of Arkwright, the first cotton mill in Arkansas. The mill was built in 1837. It burned down in 1841 and was rebuilt in 1842. It burned down again in 1849. It was rebuilt in 1850 and burned down in 1852. It was rebuilt in 1853 and operated until 1886.

The first bank in Searcy was established in 1854. The first newspaper was the White County Democrat, which was established in 1858.
