History of Palm Springs
Palm Springs, a desert resort city in Riverside County, California, United States, is about 100 miles (160 km) east of Los Angeles. It sits at an elevation of 1,368 feet (417 m). The population was 44,552 as of the 2010 census. Palm Springs covers approximately 94 square miles (240 km2), making it the largest city by area in the county. The city is also famous for its midcentury modern architecture and design elements.
The first people of European ancestry arrived in the Coachella Valley in the 1830s. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians resided in the Palm Springs area prior to European settlers. The Cahuilla name for the area was “SeKhi” (boiling water). The agua caliente (hot water) was used for healing by the Cahuilla people.
