History of Burbank

Burbank is a city in Los Angeles County in the State of California, United States. The population at the 2010 census was 104,096. It is located in the eastern San Fernando Valley and is bordered by the Verdugo Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains. The city is home to the Burbank Town Center, a regional shopping mall with an outdoor amphitheater, several office towers, and the headquarters of the Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Nickelodeon, ABC, Cartoon Network, and Insomniac Games.

Burbank was founded on August 15, 1887, by Dr. David Burbank, a dentist and real estate developer. The city was named after Dr. Burbank. The city was originally part of Rancho San Rafael, which was granted by the Mexican government to Gasparía Cory in 1834. Cory sold the land to Col. Ira Bascom in 1866. Bascom laid out the town and named it “Burbank” after his dentist friend, Dr. David Burbank.

The first school in Burbank was built in 1892. TheIvy School was later torn down and replaced by the current Burbank Elementary School in 1937. The city’s first high school, Burbank High School, opened in 1904. The school’s teams are known as the Bulldogs and the school newspaper is called the Elgin Echo.

Burbank became known as the “Heart of the Studio Area” in the 1920s and 1930s because so many movie and television studios were located there, including Warner Bros., RKO, and Columbia. In those days, if you said you were going to “the studio,” it meant you were going to Burbank.
