Downey, officially the City of Downey, is a city located in southeast Los Angeles County, California, United States, located 21 km (13 mi) southeast of downtown Los Angeles. It is considered part of the Gateway Cities. The city, once a predominantly white suburban community, has grown to include a large Hispanic community and became majority Hispanic in 2010. Downey is the birthplace of the Apollo space program, and is the hometown of Richard and Karen Carpenter. It is also the home of the oldest still operational McDonald’s restaurant in the world.
As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 111,772. Manufacturing, retail, and healthcare are the main economic activities in Downey. Major corporations headquartered in Downey include Promotional Products Association International and Puget Sound Regional Council.
The City of Downey was founded in 1956, and is named for its founder and first citizen, John G. Downey. Its roots begin with Spanish and Mexican land grants from the late 18th century. The land that would later become Downey was originally part of Rancho San Antonio, one of the largest land grants in California by the Spanish government. The amount of land included in the grant was approximately 36,000 acres (15,000 ha), or 56 square miles (150 km2).
The Rancho San Antonio land grant was given to Juan Jose Dominguez, a Spanish solider stationed at the Presidio of Santa Barbara, in 1784. The land remained in the Dominguez family until 1833, when it was sold to John G. Downey, a Irish immigrant who had arrived in California in 1832.
In 1884, the incomplete Southern Pacific Railroad reached Downey, stimulating the town’s growth. The completion of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1887 further increased Downey’s importance as a transportation hub.

History of Downey
Downey is a city located in southern California, in the southwestern part of the Greater Los Angeles area. The city had a population of 111,772 as of the 2010 census. Founded in 1956, Downey is considered to be the birthplace of the Apollo space program. It is also the hometown of the oldest commercial airport in the world, Downey Airport.
The area now known as Downey was originally inhabited by the Tongva Indians. The first European settlers in the area were the Portola expedition, who camped in what is now the Downey Civic Center in 1769. In 1784, Governor Pedro Fages granted Rancho Los Nietos to Spanish soldier Manuel Nieto. The rancho included what is now the cities of Santa Fe Springs, Whittier, Pico Rivera and Downey, as well as parts of modern Los Angeles County.
In 1833, Nieto’s soninlaw, John Gudoski, built the first house in Downey. downey has a museum documenting its history. The Santa Gertrudes asistencial (hospital) was the first hospital founded in Los Nietos in 1847. A passionate patriot, Cerra served as a private in the Mexican Army during the MexicanAmerican War (18461848) and was later elected constable of the Los Nietos district.
In 1873, Augustin and Maria Dominguez finally received the 4,340 acres (17.7 km2) Rancho Domínguez Mexican land grant from the U.S. government. The land was divided equally between the four children, with each child receiving 1,010 acres (4.1 km2). At the time, this land was located in the northern part of Los Angeles County, but it eventually became part of Orange County when that county was created in 1889.
After Cerra’s death in 1876, John Gudoski purchased the rancho from the Dominguez Family. Gudoski made substantial improvements to the property, including the construction of a new adobe house, which he completed in 1879. downey has a museum documenting its history.
In 1885, John Gudensohn and his family moved from San Francisco to Downey, where he purchased 80 acres (32 ha) of land from the Dominguez family. Gudensohn then proceeded to subdivide and sell parcels of his land, which were quickly snatched up by eager buyers. He soon became the largest landowner in Downey, and his property holdings would form the basis for the city’s future growth.
In 1893, the Gudensohns donated 10 acres (4.0 ha) of land to the Methodist Episcopal Church, which constructed a church and school on the property. The following year, the Gudensohns deeded 20 acres (8.1 ha) of land to the City of Los Angeles, which established a park on the site.
In 1904, the Downey Savings & Loan Association was chartered, marking the beginning of the city’s financial industry. However, it would not be until 1956 that the city of Downey was officially incorporated.
