History of Fort Walton Beach

Fort Walton Beach is a city in southern Okaloosa County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,597 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the Fort Walton Beach−Crestview−Destin Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Founded in the late 1940s and established as a city in 1953, Fort Walton Beach is the successor of two earlier towns, one of which on the same site had been called Camp Walton. The establishment of a fort during the American Civil War in the 1850s, however, was the genesis of the name of the current city. The fort was named in honor of Colonel George Walton, Jr., who served as Secretary of the Florida Territory from 1821 to 1826.

The heart of the new town of Fort Walton Beach was its “Main Street” area, located in the block between Brooks and Lovell Streets. The first building on Main Street, the Walton Lodge No. 12 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.), was completed in December 1949. More businesses opened on Main Street in the following years, and at its eastern end, the street intersected with Miracle Strip Parkway (then named Okaloosa Island Road). This busy intersection became known as “The intersections” and is still the city’s primary commercial hub.
