Fairfield is a city in, and the county seat of, Jefferson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 9,464 in the 2010 census, a decline from 10,592 in the 2000 census. The city is the center of a micropolitan area with a total population of 21,361. It is a principal city of the Fairfield Micropolitan Statistical Area, which consists of Jefferson and Henry counties. Fairfield was established in 1839 by settlers from Pennsylvania and Vermont. The town was named for Fairfield County, Connecticut, the county from which the majority of settlers came.
Most early settlers engaged in agricultural pursuits. The introduction of the railroad in 1856 spurred economic growth and the town was soon a hub of trade and commerce in southern Iowa. In the late 19th century, Fairfield became known as the “MECCA of Free Love”; the Fairfield Cooperative Colony (18801887), which was built on ideals of radical social change, attracted a number of socialists and anarchists, including wellknown figures such as Clarence Darrow and David Karsner.
The town was home to the Maharishi University of Management from 1974 to 1985. MUM, formerly known as Maharishi International University, was founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
