History of Fairfax
Founded in 1856, the City of Fairfax is rich in history and tradition. The City of Fairfax began as a tiny village known as Fairfax Court House. It was named for Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, the Northern Neck landowner. In 1757, Fairfax came to the area and erected a courthouse in the village. As the village increased in size, it became known as Fairfax Courthouse. In 1805, the Virginia General Assembly established a town around the courthouse. The town was chartered as a city in 1961.
