History of Eufaula (Oklahoma)
Eufaula is a city in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,191 at the 2010 census, an increase of 5.2 percent from the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Pittsburg County.
The city was founded at the site of a Choctaw trading post called Ufaola, which means “panther.” It was designated as the county seat when Pittsburg County was organized in 1907. The city was named for Eufaulawhose name means “panther.”
Eufaula was originally a farming community and the primary crop was cotton. The city’s economy changed when oil was discovered nearby in 1914. The city became a hub for the oil industry and many drilling rigs and processing plants were built in the area. The city’s population exploded and grew to over 10,000 by the early 1920s.
The oil boom ended in the late 1920s and the city’s population dropped sharply. The Great Depression also hit the city hard and by the mid1930s the population had fallen to just over 3,000. The city managed to survive and slowly began to grow again.
The economy of Eufaula diversified in the 1970s when a large paper mill was built. The city has continued to grow since then and the population was 4, erased by the 2010 census.
The city is home to a number of historical landmarks. The Pittsburg County Courthouse, built in 1910, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
