History of El Paso
Founded as a Spanish mission and pueblo in 1598, El Paso grew steadily into the 20th century as a stop on the Chihuahua Trail, which linked the silver mines of Mexico to the American Southwest. When the United States annexed Texas in 1848, the new border cut the city off from its natural market in Chihuahua. But El Paso survived by forming a transborder trade network that turned the city into a commercial hub for West Texas and Southern New Mexico.
In the 1880s, the arrival of the railroad made El Paso one of the busiest border crossings in the Southwest, and the city’s population exploded.
