History of Eagle Pass
Situated on the Rio Grande in southwestern Texas, Eagle Pass has a long and rich history. The earliest known human occupants of the area were the Coahuiltecan Indians, who were thought to have arrived in the 12th century. These peaceful people established villages and farmlands along the river and lived in the area for centuries.
In the late 17th century, Spanish explorer Alonzo de Leon came to the Rio Grande in search of treasure. After hearing tales of a rich city called El Pueblo de las Agujas (The City of Eagles), de Leon was hopeful he had found the fabled lost city of Cibola. However, upon reaching the site, he found only a small Indian village. Disappointed, he continued on his journey.
In the early 1800s, Eagle Pass became a staging ground for the Mexican War of Independence. It was here that General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna gathered his troops before marching on to victory at the Battle of the Alamo.
After the war, Eagle Pass remained a sleepy backwater town until the coming of the railroad in the 1880s. With the new transportation link, Eagle Pass became a bustling border town and an important trading post. The town continued to grow in the early 20th century, despite the challenges posed by the Great Depression and World War II.
