Des Plaines is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 58,364. It is the eighthlargest city in Illinois.
Des Plaines is located on the Chicago River. The city is bordered by Park Ridge to the west, Mount Prospect to the northwest, and Niles to the southwest. To the east is Schaumburg and to the northeast is Elk Grove Village, both suburbs of Chicago in Cook County.
The first permanent settler in Des Plaines was John McKenzie, who arrived from Scotland in 1834. In 1839, seven settlers from New York City established the Village of Rand, which was later renamed to Des Plaines and incorporated as a city in 1857.
The Des Plaines River runs through the city, just east of Interstate 294 and north of Route 53. TheDaily Herald newspaper is based in the city.

The area around Des Plaines was first settled by Native Americans. The Potawatomi and Miami tribes were the first to call the area home. The first European settler in the area was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, a Haitian of African and French descent. He settled on the banks of the Chicago River in the 1780s.
In 1829, the first permanent settlement in the area was established by Edmund Dexinger. He built a log cabin on the Des Plaines River. The settlement grew slowly, but more settlers arrived after the Black Hawk War in 1832. In 1846, the first school in the area was built.
