Westminster is a Home Rule Municipality that is the capital city of the US state of Colorado and it is the county seat of Adams County. With a 2019 estimated population of 118,461, it is the 21st most populous city in the state of Colorado and the 247th most populous city in the United States. Westminster is a northwest suburb of Denver. The Westminster Municipal Center is located 9 miles (14 km) northnorthwest of the Colorado State Capitol. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the city population was 106,114 on April 1, 2010 Census. Westminster voted to incorporate as a city on July 1, 1911.
Westminster is located at 39°52′N 105°03′W / 39.87°N 105.05°W / 39.87; 105.05 (39.8709, −105.0505), situated between Denver and Boulder in the northwest area of the Denver metropolitan area. Westminster lies immediately west of the intersection of Interstate 25 and US 36 (DenverBoulder Turnpike), to the north of Sheridan Boulevard, to the south of West 104th Avenue/Oak Street, and to the east of Lyons View Parkway/West 91st Court. The city is bounded by Broomfield to the north and east, Wheat Ridge to the southeast, Denver to the south, and Northglenn to the southwest.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 32.93 square miles (85.27 km2), of which 32.74 square miles (84.73 km2) is land and 0.19 square miles (0.49 km2) (0.58%) is water. In July 2005, the city completed construction and opened the doors to its new city hall building, which cost about $42 million. The building consolidates the former city hall, police station and municipal court into one facility. The council and mayor occupy the second floor, while the first floor houses the court and the Visitor Information Center. In front of the city hall is a fountain sculpture featuring a Native American warrior on a horse, which was sculpted by designed by Elden Tefft.

History of Westminster (Colorado)
The city of Westminster is located in northcentral Colorado, about 10 miles northwest of downtown Denver. The city was founded in the early 1870s as a farming community, and was originally named Handsome Plat. In 1874, the name was changed to Westminster after a nearby Methodist Episcopal church. The city was incorporated in 1902.
The early history of Westminster is closely tied to the development of agriculture in the region. The city’s fertile soil and ample water resources made it an ideal location for farming. The first crops planted in the area were wheat and oats, but farmers soon began to grow a variety of vegetables, fruits and flowers. Irrigation canals were built to water the fields, and the city became known for its “vegetable gardens.”
In the early 20th century, Westminster began to experience population growth as people moved to the city from the rural areas surrounding it. This growth continued after World War II, and by the 1960s Westminster had become a thriving suburb of Denver. In recent years, the city has experienced a boom in development, as new residential and commercial construction has transformed Westminster into a thriving urban community.
