History of Visalia
Situated in the heart of California’s agricultural San Joaquin Valley, Visalia is a vibrant and historic community. The City of Visalia was incorporated in 1852, making it the fifth oldest city in California. Visalia is located within walking distance of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, home to the Giant Sequoias, the largest living things on earth.
The City of Visalia has a colorful history. The first people to settle in the area were the Yokuts and Mono Indians. The Yokuts were a peaceful people who lived off the land, while the warlike Mono Indians inhabited the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the east. The Yokuts and Mono Indians coexisted until the early 1800’s when white settlers began moving into the area.
One of the first white settlers in the area was Captain Angus Gillis. Gillis arrived in 1839 and established a ranch near present day Visalia. In 1849, gold was discovered in California, sparking a massive influx of miners and prospectors into the state. Many of these fortune seekers made their way to Visalia, which quickly became a booming town.
Visalia’s history is also marked by tragedy. In 1862, the town was raided by a band of Yokuts Indians led by a chief named Jim Savage. The Indians attacked without warning, killing nineteen people and burning much of the town. The citizens of Visalia quickly rebuilt, but the incident left many residents with a deep mistrust of the Yokuts.
In the early 1900’s, Visalia was a stop on the famed “Mother Road”, Route 66. The town was also the setting for John Steinbeck’s novel, “The Grapes of Wrath”.
