History of Dahlonega
Dahlonega is a city in Lumpkin County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 5,242.
Dahlonega is located at the north end of Georgia 400, which connects it to Atlanta. It is the county seat of Lumpkin County.
The Dahlonega area was first inhabited by the Cherokee people. Dahlonega is derived from a Cherokee word meaning “yellow money”.
In 1828, the United States government established a gold mint in Dahlonega. This made Dahlonega the site of the first gold rush in the United States. The Dahlonega Gold Museum is now housed in the former mint building.
In 1849, Dahlonega was designated as the seat of Lumpkin County.
During the Civil War, Dahlonega was a target of Union raids due to its status as a Confederate goldmining center. In 1864, Union troops looted and burned much of the city.
After the war, Dahlonega’s fortunes improved with the discovery of new gold deposits. The city once again became a thriving mining center.
