Danville is a city in, and the county seat of, Boyle County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 16,690 at the 2010 census. Danville is the principal city of the Danville, Kentucky Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Boyle and Lincoln counties.
Settled by European Americans in 1783, Danville was named for Revolutionary War veteran and Kentucky state legislator John Danforth Boyle. It was the state capital of Kentucky from 1792 to 1796. After the war, many of Kentucky’s veterans moved there to claim lands they had been promised by the Legislature. The city has a number of historic homes and landmarks. The Centre College campus contains several historic buildings. Downtown Danville features a district of 20 blocks of the commercial main street, full of preserved Victorian architecture. Homes within the city limits include the BateDostert House, a preCivil War Era limestone house on Mill Street, and Hopewell Museum, an 18thcentury log home which serves as a museum of local history.

History of Danville (Kentucky)
Danville is a city located in Boyle County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 16,690 at the 2010 census. Danville is the principal city of the Danville Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Boyle and Lincoln counties.
In 1780, James Harrod founded Harrodsburg, Kentucky, which he named after his father. In 1786, the Virginia General Assembly established Danville as a town on 83 acres (340,000 m2) of land west of Harrodsburg.
Danville was once a bustling railroad town, and singing in the streets could often be heard. The L&N Railroad Depot on Main Street was a busy place. Danville was also home to Barker College, a women’s college founded in 1881 which eventually merged with Centre College.
The first school in Danville opened in 1783. Danville Public Schools now operate six elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and one alternative school. Danville also has a private school, Danville Christian Academy. Danville High School is notable for its rivalry with Boyle County High School. The two schools often compete in athletics and academics.
The war brought many changes to Danville. Camp Burnam, located where Millennium Park is now, was a Union training camp during the Civil War. It was also used as a hospital for wounded soldiers. More than 1,600 soldiers are buried in the Danville National Cemetery.
In 1887, the Danville Water Works was established, providing the city with its first modern water supply. In 1912, Danville obtained its first electricity from the Kentucky Utilities Company.
The early twentieth century saw the beginning of Danville’s modern history. In 1902, the Fruit Growers’ Association packed and shipped the first crates of strawberries grown in Boyle County. In 1913, the Boyle County Courthouse was completed.
In 1954, the City of Danville and the County of Boyle entered into a Memorandum of Agreement which guaranteed “unity of government” within the county. The agreement remains in effect today.
In 1961, the first Walmart store was built in Rogers, Arkansas. The company’s founder, Sam Walton, chose the location for his store based on its proximity to Danville.
In 1965, the HartDoleInouye Federal Center was completed in Danville. The center is named for three United States Senators: Republican William Hart, Democratvisionist Hubert Humphrey, and Democrat Spark Matsunaga.
In 1971, General Motors built a large factory in Danville. The factory, which was originally built to make BoyceRobertson carburetors, eventually began producing engines for GM’s line of lightduty trucks. The factory closed in 2005.
In 2006, the Danville School Board approved a resolution to change the name of Danville High School to George Rogers Clark High School. The change took effect in 2007.
Today, Danville is a thriving community with a diverse economy. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, as well as a growing number of healthcare and technology businesses. Danville is also home to Centre College, a nationallyranked liberal arts college.
