City of Newton, Iowa, United States The City of Newton is a city in Jasper County, Iowa, United States. The population was 15,254 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jasper County and is the home of Iowa Speedway. The city is named after Sir Isaac Newton in honor of its early settlers from Newton, Massachusetts. In 1846, Newton was designated as the county seat of Jasper County, Iowa. The first Jasper County Courthouse was built in 1847. The second courthouse was constructed of brick and stone in 1854. The cost of the building was $17,500. The present courthouse, the third one, was built of steel and stone in 1903. The cost of the building was $200,000. The city is home to the Iowa Speedway, a 7/8mile (1.4 km) Dshaped oval speedway. The speedway held its first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2009. The speedway also held its first NASCAR Xfinity Series races in 2010. The speedway has also hosted the IndyCar Series, the ARCA Racing Series, the USAC Silver Crown Series, and the World of Outlaws sprint cars.
