History of Phenix City

incorporated on February 13, 1907. Phenix City’s charter was: “To provide for the establishment and maintenance within the corporate limits of the city of a municipal government founded upon the principles of efficient management and dedicated to the highest ideals of public service and prosperity”. Prior to incorporation, the area was known as Brownville. It was named for Major James Phenix, who operated a hotel and ferries across the Chattahoochee River at the site.

Phenix City lies adjacent to Columbus, Georgia, the seat of Muscogee County and the fifth largest city in the state. The two cities are consolidated under the Consolidated Government of ColumbusMuscogee County. Together, they have a population of about 500,000 people.

Phenix City’s history is intertwined with that of its neighbors. The area now occupied by the city was first settled by the Creek Indians, who built a town called Eufaula at the confluence of the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers. The Creek ceded the land to the United States in the Treaty of Indian Springs in 1821. The treaty resulted in the forced removal of most of the Creek to Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). A few Creek remained in the area, and their descendants are still visible in the city’s population.

Many of the early settlers of the Phenix City area were veterans of the Indian Wars or of the War of 1812. Phenix City developed as a frontier town, and its early economy was based on timber and agriculture. The city was also a destination for riverboat traffic on the Chattahoochee. In the early 20th century, Phenix City was the site of a large paper mill and sawmill. The city’s economic base diversified in the mid20th century, with the addition of textile mills, a steel mill, and other manufacturing plants.

Phenix City’s proximity to Fort Benning, a major U.S. Army installation, also spurred economic growth. The population of Phenix City grew rapidly during and after World War II, from about 5,000 in 1940 to about 28,000 in 1960.

Phenix City’s reputation was tainted in the 1950s by a scandal known as the Phenix City Racket. This name was given to a pervasive system of crime and corruption, involving gambling, prostitution, and other illegal activities, that was controlled by a local crime boss. The Racket was eventually broken up by a crusading district attorney, who was later assassinated. The Racket and the assassination were dramatized in the 1955 film The Phenix City Story.

Since the 1960s, Phenix City has experienced steady growth. The city annexed several neighboring communities in the 1970s and 1980s, and new residential and commercial developments have been built. The city’s population was estimated at 33,500 in 2017.
