Richmond is a city in eastcentral Indiana, United States, bordering on Ohio. It is the county seat of Wayne County, and in the 2010 census had a population of 36,812. Situated largely within Wayne County, its outskirts extend into neighboring Randolph and Union counties. The city is sometimes called the “cradle of recorded jazz” because some early jazz records were made there at the studio of Gennett Records, which flourished from 1917 to 1935. The city has received the AllAmerican City Award three times.
The Fork of the White River and Whitewater River meet in Richmond, Indiana. The Fork winds its way through this deep river cut ravine in the city’s eastern section. History of Richmond (Indiana)
Richmond, Indiana is a city in Wayne County, East Central Indiana. The population was 36,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wayne County, and hosted the county’s only consolidated citycounty government until January 1, 2007, when the city of Richmond and Wayne County governments separated. Richmond is the home of two colleges, Earlham College and Indiana University East. Richmond lies in the heart of Wayne County, east of the Indianapolis metropolitan area.
Richmond was founded in 1806 by James B. Rich, who donated part of his land for the town’s establishment. On January 11, 1812, Richmond was incorporated as a town with a population of 507. On April 1, 1873, Richmond was Incorporated as a city. The first mayor was John Haymond.
The town grew slowly but steadily throughout the early 19th century, assisted by a stagecoach line between Centerville and Cincinnati and the construction of the National Road in 1820. By 1834 the town had a population of 1,000. Many of the new residents were Quakers who had migrated from North Carolina and Pennsylvania. They founded the Friends Meeting House in 1824 and established Earlham College in 1847.
With the help of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, which reached Richmond in 1857, the town became an important industrial center in the late 19th century. Manufacturing companies located in Richmond included USAmeriBraid, Gennett Records, General Electric, Reynolds Metals Company, Perfect Circle, and American Popcorn Company.
