History of Ottawa (Kansas)
Ottawa is a city located in Franklin County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 12,649. It is the county seat of Franklin County. The city was named after the Ottawa tribe of Native Americans.
The Chippewa, Fox, Mascouten, Miami, Ottawa, Potawatomi, and Sauk peoples were the first inhabitants of the area. The first European settlement in the area was made in 1831 by Cyrus K. Holliday, who later established the Santa Fe Trail.
In 1854, the Kansas Territory was opened to white settlement. Ottawa was founded in 1860 and incorporated as a city in 1865. The city was a stagecoach stop on the Santa Fe Trail and a terminus of the Pony Express.
During the American Civil War, Ottawa was a staunch supporter of the Union. It was even rumored that Ottawa would be the capital of the United States if the Union won the war.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ottawa became a center of the wheat farming industry. The city is still known as the “Wheat Capital of the World.”
The city is also home to the MidAmerica Air Museum, which has one of the largest collections of vintage aircraft in the world.
