History of Camden (New Jersey)
Founded in 1626 by settlement agent Edward Byllynge on behalf of the New Netherland colony, Camden is one of the oldest municipalities in the state of New Jersey. It was incorporated as a borough on February 13, 1828, and re chartered as a city on November 29, 1851. The city derives its name from Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden, an Englishman who was serving as Lord Chancellor at the time the municipality was named.
Prone to flooding from the nearby Delaware River, which borders Camden to the east, the city has experienced significant redevelopment and urbanization over the course of its history. Major projects undertaken during the 19th and early 20th centuries included the construction of the Ben Franklin Bridge and the Camden Waterfront.
During the 20th century, Camden was a major manufacturing center and many of the city’s residents were employed by the RCA Victor Company, which had a large factory in Camden. The city also developed as a transportation hub, with multiple railroads and the Camden Shipyard and Dry Dock Company operating within its borders.
In the latter half of the 20th century, however, Camden fell on hard times. Manufacturers left the city for cheaper locations and jobs disappeared. Camden became known for crime and poverty, and it was ranked as one of the most dangerous cities in the United States in the early 21st century.
The city has made significant strides in revitalizing itself in recent years, however. New investment has brought residential and commercial development to downtown Camden, and the city is working to improve its schools and attract new businesses.
