History of Biloxi

Biloxi is a city located in Harrison County, Mississippi. The city was incorporated in 1838 and named after the nearby Biloxi Bay. It was originally settled by the French in 1699 as part of the La Louisiane colony. Biloxi quickly became a thriving commercial center due to its convenient location at the mouth of the Mississippi River and its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.

The city was heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since then, Biloxi has undergone extensive rebuilding efforts. Today, the city is a popular tourist destination known for its casinos, golf courses, and beaches.

The earliest known inhabitants of the Biloxi area were Native American tribes such as the Choctaw and the Pinckney. The first European settlers to arrive in the area were French explorers led by Sieur d’Iberville. D’Iberville established the colony of La Louisiane in 1699 near presentday Ocean Springs.

In 1719, the town of Biloxi was founded. It quickly became a prosperous commercial center due to its convenient location. The first church was built in 1722 and the first school in 1764.

During the American Civil War, Biloxi was occupied by Union forces. After the war, Biloxi became a popular resort destination for wealthy Americans. In the late 19th century, the city’s population exploded due to the arrival of several thousand immigrants from Italy, Croatia, and Germany.

Biloxi was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The storm surge destroyed much of the city’s infrastructure and caused widespread damage. Since then, Biloxi has undergone an extensive rebuilding process. Today, the city is once again a popular tourist destination.
