History of Berlin (Connecticut)
Berlin, Connecticut was founded in 1785 and incorporated as a town in 1800. It is the capital of Hartford County and the seat of government for the State of Connecticut. The town was named after a Prussian city by a settler who had served in the Revolutionary War.
The first settlers in the area were Yankees from Farmington and Middletown. They cleared the forest to establish farms and built homes along the banks of the Mattabesett River. In 1769, a group of men from Farmington organized the Middlesex Land Company and bought 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) of land along the river from the local Indians for $800.
The first European settler in the area was Joshua Robbins, who bought land from the Middlesex Land Company in 1785. He built a log cabin near what is now the intersection of Main and Railroad Streets. Other settlers soon followed, and Berlin became a thriving farming community.
The need for a church in the town was evident, and the first meetinghouse was built in 1786 on the green where the Congregational Church now stands. The following year, the Ministerial Society was organized, and the Rev. Thomas Hooker was called as the first minister.
The town continued to grow, and by the early 1800s there were several stores, blacksmiths, a tavern, and a number of small industries in operation. The first schoolhouse was built in 1803, and the Academy was chartered in 1811.
The town’s central location and good transportation infrastructure made it an ideal candidate for the state capital, and in 1812 Berlin was chosen as the capital of Connecticut. The state legislature and governor’s office were moved to Berlin, and the town became the center of state government.
The influx of government workers and their families helped to spur the town’s growth, and Berlin soon became a thriving city. It continued to serve as the state capital until 1873, when the capital was moved to Hartford.
Despite the loss of the government jobs, Berlin continued to grow and prosper. The coming of the railroad in the 1850s brought new industry and tourism to the town, and by the early 1900s, Berlin was a wellestablished small city.
The 20th century brought new challenges to Berlin, as the town faced the effects of the Great Depression and two World Wars. However, the city emerged from these hard times stronger than ever, and today Berlin is a vibrant and thriving community.
