History of Belleville

The city of Belleville, Illinois is situated in St. Clair County and is considered a part of the MetroEast region of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1814 by George Blair, who named it after his wife, Mary Ann Belleville. The city was originally part of the Illinois Territory before it became a part of the state of Illinois in 1818.

Belleville was the first city established in St. Clair County, and it served as the county seat from 1814 until 1865 when that honor was transferred to the larger city of Bloomington. Belleville remained a small, but thriving city throughout the 19th century due in part to its position along the Mississippi River which made it a important stop for riverboat traffic.

The city really began to grow in the early 20th century, however, when it became a manufacturing center for the Grand Trunk Railroad. The railroad established a major repair shop in Belleville in 1902, which led to an influx of new workers and their families. The population of Belleville more than doubled between 1900 and 1920, and the city continued to grow rapidly in the following decades.

Today, Belleville is a diverse city with a population of just over 44,000. It is home to a large GermanAmerican community, as well as a significant number of African Americans, Hispanics, and other minority groups. The city is also home to several colleges and universities, including Southern Illinois UniversityEdwardsville, and continues to be an important transportation hub for the region.
