History of Batesville
Batesville, Arkansas is a city in Independence County. The county seat of Batesville is the city of the same name. The population was 10,262 at the 2010 census. The city is the home of the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, as well as a campus of Lyon College.
The first settlers in the Batesville area were Native Americans who built small villages along the White River. French explorers visited the area in the 1600s and 1700s, and the first permanent European settlement was established in 1804. The town was named after Territorial Judge James Woodson Bates, who established his home there in 1809.
