History of Georgetown (Colorado)

Georgetown is a city in and the county seat of Clear Creek County, Colorado, United States. It is located at the base of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The Silver Queen Mine was the major silver mining operation in Georgetown from 1867 to 1880, when it was closed due to a drop in silver prices. Although silver mining continued for a time, Georgetown’s days as a silvermining town were numbered, and it became a supply center for other mining operations in the area, as well as a popular tourist destination.

In 1867, silver was discovered in Georgetown by George Jackson, a prospector from Lawrence, Kansas. Jackson discovered the “Paymaster Lode” on May 7, 1867. This discovery started a silver rush to the area, and by 1868, there were approximately 500 miners in the Georgetown area. By 1869, the population of the town had grown to over 3,000.

The early years of silver mining in Georgetown were very successful, with the miners extracting an estimated $10 million worth of silver from the Paymaster Mine alone. However, the silver boom came to an end in 1880, when the price of silver dropped sharply. This caused many of the mines in Georgetown to close, and the population of the town to drop to less than 1,000.

Despite the setback of the silver crash, Georgetown continued to grow and prosper. It became the county seat of Clear Creek County in 1873, and in 1877, the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad arrived in town. This made Georgetown one of the easiest places to reach in the Rockies, and it soon became a popular tourist destination. Today, Georgetown is a thriving small town with a population of just over 1,000. It is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Hotel de Paris Museum, and its scenic location at the base of the Front Range makes it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
