History of Aurora (Colorado)

Aurora is the third most populous city in the US state of Colorado and the 56th most populous city in the country. Aurora is a Home Rule Municipality spanning Arapahoe, Adams, and Douglas counties, and is one of the principal cities of the DenverAuroraLakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area (Metro Denver). The city’s estimated 2019 population was 380,890, making it the second most populous city in the state of Colorado and the 53rd most populous city in the United States.

Aurora originated in the 1880s as the town of Fletcher, taking its name from Denver businessman Donald Fletcher who saw it as a real estate opportunity. He and other investors staked out foursquare miles (10 km2) east of Denver, but the town and Colorado struggled mightily after the Silver Crash of 1893. At that point, weighing in at 7,200 residents, the town was renamed Aurora in 1907, after one of the subdivisions composing the town, and incorporated in 1928. Aurora is one of the fastestgrowing cities in the United States and its population has nearly doubled in the last decade.

From the city’s inception, Aurora has had a tumultuous relationship with Denver. Despite its proximity to the state’s capital, Aurora did not become an official city until028, after a failed attempt to annex Denver. The two cities have repeatedly battled in the courts over matters of annexation and shared water resources.

In the early 21st century, Aurora has been characterized by suburban sprawl and middleclass values. In recent years, however, the city has seen an increased focus on cultural diversity and arts, as well as urban redevelopment in its older areas, particularly the downtown district.Like much of the Denver metropolitan area, Aurora’s economy is diversified, with a concentration in scientific and technical services, health care, and government.
