In 1784, the Spanish Crown deeded the land to Juan Jose Dominguez, a Spanish soldier who came to California with the Portola expedition. The city grew rapidly after World War II, and from the 1950s onward, Torrance became increasingly suburban.

Torrance is a coastal city in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County, California, United States. The city is named after its founder, torrance Torrance Beach. It is one of the beach cities that make up the South Bay.

According to the 2010 census, the city had a population of 145,438. The estimated population as of 2019 is 152,039.

The city was incorporated in 1921, and is one of the few U.S. cities to be named after its founder. A portion of the city south of Del Amo Boulevard is asks unincorporated area.

The area known as Old Torrance has a long history dating back to the Spanish era. It is the site of the Dominguez Rancho Adobe, the oldest structure in the city, and the Rancho San Pedro, on which the city is also located. The original settlement in the area was called “El Rancho de los Palos Verdes” (“The Ranch of the Green Trees”), but this name was later changed to “Torrance” in honor of its founder.

The first recorded mention of Torrance was in Spanish land grant documents from the era, which referred to the area as “la Cañada de Verdes” (the canyon of the greens). In the early 1900s, real estate developer Jared Sidney Torrance and his business partner Frederick H. Rindge bought large tracts of land in the area and developed it into a farming community. They built a pier and a railroad line to bring in fruits and vegetables from nearby farms.

Jared Torrance was also instrumental in bringing electricity to the area, and helped found the suburb of Hollywood in 1903. He died in 1906, but his legacy continues in the city that bears his name.

The city of Torrance was named after Jared Sidney Torrance, a pioneer real estate developer in Southern California. In 1864, Torrance, along with his business partner Frederick H. Rindge, purchased Rancho San Pedro, which encompassed the entire area that is now the city of Torrance. They developed the land into a farming community and built a pier and a railroad line to bring in fruits and vegetables from the surrounding farms.

In the early 1900s, Torrance played a key role in the development of Hollywood, California. He helped found the suburb of Hollywood in 1903 and served as its first mayor. He also brought electricity to the area and built a streetcar line that connected Hollywood to downtown Los Angeles.

Torrance died in 1906, but his legacy continues in the city that bears his name. Today, the city of Torrance is a thriving community of more than 145,000 people. It is home to a number of businesses, industries, and cultural attractions, and is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world.
