Founded in 1828, Columbus is Georgia’s thirdlargest city and the state’s only urban center located on the Chattahoochee River. The city’s urban area extends eastward into neighboring Muscogee County, with which it has consolidated since 1970. Columbus is best known for being the site of Fort Benning, The United States Army Armor School, Infantry School, and Signal School, and as the home of The peach state’s oldest and largest public Historically black college and university (HBCU), Columbus State University.

The area now known as Columbus once served as a meeting place for Native Americans from as far away as the Appalachian Mountains. The Muskogee people occupied Columbus until 1825, when the Creek ceded their land to the United States government as part of the Indian Removal Act. One of the few remaining Buffer States left after the American Civil War, Columbus increased in prosperity and became a striking example of the New South.
