History of Savannah
The city of Savannah was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe. It was the last of the thirteen American colonies to be established. The colony was chartered by King George II and was named after his daughter, the Princess of Wales, Savannah. The city was designed by British surveyor John Mullroy and Oglethorpe. It consisted of a series of squares, with streets running northsouth and eastwest. The squares were interconnected by four main streets, which ran at right angles to each other.
The city’s layout, with its squares and grid pattern, is remarkably similar to that of the city of Savannah in Georgia, which was also designed by Oglethorpe. In fact, Savannah is one of only a handful of cities in the world with this kind of city plan.
The original town was divided into wards, with each ward electing two aldermen to the Common Council. The aldermen then chose a mayor from among their ranks. This system of government continued until the American Revolution, when Savannah was occupied by the British.
After the war, Savannah was governed by a state legislature and a mayor. In 1864, during the Civil War, the city was captured by Union forces. It was later declared a Union “free port,” which meant that goods entering the port were not subject to import tariffs.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Savannah became a major cotton shipping port and a leading manufacturer of rosin and turpentine. The city also grew as a tourist destination, due in part to its historic architecture and charming squares.
