History of Bangor
The City of Bangor was first settled in the winter of 176970 by James Putnam and his family. The land they settled on was virgin forest with no roads or trails. For the first few years, they built a log cabin and barely scratched out a living. Putnam then built a sawmill and gristmill on the banks of the Penobscot River which brought in more settlers. The community slowly grew and in 1791, it was incorporated as a town.
In the early days, the main industry was lumbering and shipbuilding. The abundant timber in the area was logged and milled and then used to build ships which were launched from the sandy beach on the river. As the shipbuilding industry grew, so did the city. By the mid 1800s, Bangor was one of the largest shipbuilding centers in the country.
The city continued to grow in the late 1800s and early 1900s as more industries moved in. Bangor became known as the “Queen City of the East” and was a major stop on the transcontinental railroad.
