History of Aspen
Aspen is a city in and the county seat of Pitkin County, Colorado, United States. Its population was 6,658 at the 2010 census. Aspen is in a remote area of the Rocky Mountains’ Sawatch Range and Elk Mountains, along the Roaring Fork River at an elevation just below 8,000 feet (2,400 m) above sea level on the Western Slope, 11 miles (18 km) west of the Continental Divide. Founded as a mining town during the Colorado Silver Boom and later named “Aspen” because of the abundant aspen trees in the area, the city boomed during the 1880s, its first decade of existence. Mining declined in the 1890s, but theremained large enough to support a 62room luxury hotel called The Jerome, which opened in 1889.
Aspen’s development as a ski resort started in the 1930s when Friedl Pfeifer discovered dusty old ski equipment in the attic of a lodge at the nearby ghost town of Ashcroft. He assembled a tow rope and a few friends, and returned in the winter to try out the equipment. They Stomped the white stuff (later called Deeppowder), as it was too shallow to ski on. But word spread and within a few years Aspen had a ski area and clubhouse on Ajax Mountain, now the Aspen Mountain ski area. The world’s first enclosed chairlift was also built there.
In 1946, Aspen was the site of the World Championships, which were held at the newly constructed Aspen Highlands ski area. It also hosted the 1950 FIS World Ski Championships. Aspen has been a regular stop on the World Cup circuit since its inception in the early 1970s, and has hosted numerous national championships and Olympic trials.
